Our Process for Screeded Floors
Identifying Floor Type
The first step is identifying whether the floor is:
- Anhydrite screed
- Sand and cement screed
- Cementitious flowing screed
- Concrete
We also assess screed strength, typically measured in N/mm², to ensure suitability for floor milling underfloor heating installation.
This ensures the smooth installation of your retrofit underfloor heating system.
Pre-Start Site Visit
A pre-installation survey is conducted to confirm:
- Manifold locations
- Existing floor services
- Heating controls
- Installation timelines
This ensures the smooth installation of your retrofit underfloor heating system.
Zone Drawings and Schematics
We provide detailed zoning drawings showing:
- Thermostatic control zones
- Pipe routing layouts
- Manifold locations
- Electrical first-fix schematics
Plumbing integration drawings can also be supplied where required.
Installation Requirements
To complete the floor milling installation, we require:
- Vehicular access within 10 metres
- Adequate lighting if required
- Access to clean water
- A clear working area
Floors must be level and free from holes, plaster residue, tile adhesive, or obstructions.
Logistics for Installation
Our specialist floor milling machines operate using 415V / 3-phase power and require a dedicated generator housed within our vehicles.
Ground-floor access is preferred. Where access is limited, ramps or mechanical lifting equipment may be required.
Our Installation Process
1. Marking Out
Fixed furniture locations such as kitchen units and sanitary ware are marked out before installation begins. Pipes are typically positioned 100–150mm away from fixed items.
2. Manifold Installation
The manifold is securely installed once the final location has been confirmed.
Typical manifold positioning:
Approximately 1 metre from finished floor level
Top height around 700mm
Adjustments can be made to suit the project requirements.
3. Floor Milling
Our engineers mark out the heating circuits before carrying out the precision floor milling process.
Using advanced dust extraction and HEPA filtration systems, we create precise 16–17mm wide by 20mm deep channels within the screed.
Our milled screed underfloor heating layout uses reverse return or bifilar pipe patterns for optimal heat distribution and system efficiency.
4. Pipe Installation
We install premium 16mm multilayer PERT pipe with an oxygen barrier for superior heat transfer and durability.
Benefits include:
Long lifespan
Excellent heat performance
75–100 year manufacturer warranties
No joints or couplings are used within the floor during initial installation.
5. System Testing
Once installed, the UFH system is filled, pressure tested, and fully commissioned in accordance with manufacturer and building regulations.
6. Controls Installation
Thermostatic controls and smart heating systems are supplied together with installation schematics and operating instructions.
Each manifold loop is clearly labelled for easy identification.
7. Commissioning
Following installation, the system is balanced and commissioned to maximise efficiency and heating performance.
This includes:
- Thermostat calibration
- Flow rate adjustments
- Temperature setup
- Heating optimisation
Heat is introduced gradually to protect the screed and floor finishes.
Key Benefits of Our Milled Screed UFH System
- Minimal disruption during installation
- Virtually dust-free floor milling process
- Lower running costs
- Compatible with heat pumps
- Even heat distribution
- No radiators required
- Suitable for renovations and retrofit projects
- Works with most floor coverings
- Energy-efficient low-temperature heating
After Installation – Floor Coverings
To achieve the best performance from your milled screed underfloor heating system, we strongly recommend applying a liquid levelling screed before installing final floor finishes.
Carpet Flooring
A liquid levelling screed is essential before fitting carpet over the UFH system.
For efficient heat transfer:
Carpet TOG rating should not exceed 2.5 TOG
Engineered Wood Flooring
Although engineered wood can technically be installed without a levelling screed, we strongly recommend one for long-term stability and improved performance.
We also recommend installing temperature sensors, as engineered wood typically has a maximum temperature tolerance of 27°C.
Tile Flooring
For tiled floors, a decoupling membrane should be installed to accommodate thermal expansion and movement.
This helps protect tiled surfaces from stress and cracking.
Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT)
LVT flooring requires:
Liquid levelling screed
High-temperature adhesive
Temperature sensors
This protects the flooring finish and ensures compliance with manufacturer recommendations.
Our Frequently Asked Questions
Explore our FAQs to learn more about retrofit underfloor heating, floor milling, energy efficiency, heat pump compatibility, and installation requirements.

This combination delivers excellent energy efficiency and lower running costs.
How does water underfloor heating compare to electric underfloor heating?
Water-based retrofit underfloor heating systems are significantly more cost-effective for whole-home heating compared to electric systems.
They provide:
- Lower running costs
- Better efficiency
- Greater heating output
- Whole-property heating capability
What floor coverings are compatible with milled screed UFH systems?
Compatible floor finishes include:
- Tiles and stone
- Carpet and carpet tiles
- Engineered wood and laminates

For temperature-sensitive flooring, we recommend floor probes and temperature sensors.
Performance and Efficiency
How does milled screed underfloor heating work?
Our floor milling process cuts precision channels into the screed where heating pipes are installed close to the floor surface.
This creates:
- Fast heat response times
- Even heat distribution
- Excellent efficiency
- Zero floor build-up
Will underfloor heating create cold spots?
No. Our pipe layouts are designed using balanced heating patterns to ensure even warmth across the entire floor area.
